It was a joy to re-design and build this website for the The Cowichan Family Caregiver Support Society (CFCSS), a fantastic non-profit organization that provides important community services for family caregivers in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island.
The previous website hadn’t been professionally supported for a few years and the lack of maintenance on this older WordPress build meant things weren’t looking great or working well. It was impossible for staff to make necessary updates, and difficult for site visitors to get the information they needed.
During the design strategy phase, it was clear that the priority for the new site was ease of use, both for the organization itself, and the community they serve. Most of the people visiting the CFCSS website are seniors, which heavily informed the design choices. We used a large font size, high contrast ratios, and emphasized simplicity in site navigation. These important choices helped make the experience for users as smooth as possible.
For the CFCSS team, it was important to set up the website with longevity in mind. We used a new WordPress build and made sure to keep the number of working parts at a minimum by limiting the use of third-party plugins wherever possible. This helped to future-proof the site as much as possible in terms of visual design, functionality and security.
